School Nursing Service
The School Nursing Service works with children, young people, and their families from 5 to 19 years old. School Nurses are specialist community public health nurses who are usually aligned with a local school or group of schools. They provide:
- Confidential support and advice on physical and emotional health (e.g., healthy eating, sexual health, emotional wellbeing, bullying).
- National screening programmes (e.g., vision/hearing screening and the National Child Measurement Programme).
- Support for children with complex health needs or disabilities within the school setting, often contributing to Education and Health Care Plans (EHCPs). They act as a key link between home, school, and specialist health services.
Health Visiting Service
The Health Visiting Service supports all families with children aged 0 to 5 years old (pre-school). Health Visitors are qualified nurses or midwives with specialist training in community public health. They provide:
- Routine health and developmental reviews (e.g., at new birth, 1 year, and 2-2.5 years).
- Advice on areas like infant feeding, sleep, and minor illnesses.
- Targeted support for issues such as postnatal depression or early developmental concerns, and make referrals to specialist services as needed.
